Calligraphy haircut is great for thin hair, here’s why

Haircut trends come and go, but haircut techniques are much less common. When we heard about the calligraphy cup, we were instantly intrigued and conjured up images of 19th century calligraphers in palace costume gnawing at our manes. It turns out we weren’t very far. Here’s how the technique works and what you need to know before asking for it or trying it for yourself… if you’re feeling daring.

“A calligraphic haircut is a form of haircut that uses a knife, called a calligraphy pen, rather than a pair of scissors,” says salon owner and professional stylist Gina Rivera.

What is the calligraphy haircut?

The technique leans on the difficult side because it requires the mastery of a whole new tool. “While my dad and uncle were both very experienced in razor cuts, it’s always exciting to see the tools of the trade increase and expand. The calligraphy cutting technique uses a specialized calligraphy cutting knife that uniquely cuts the hair at a 21 degree angle by trimming it. The technique does not use shears, ”explains Gina.

“The calligraphy haircut is a cool and unique way to add texture to hair while adding body and movement,” says celebrity stylist Ramon Garcia (and my stylist, well done!) At the Ramirez Tran Salon.

Who should try a calligraphy cut?

Since it adds so much movement, it is a game-changer for women with thin manes. “This cut is fabulous for creating volume and works especially well for those wearing a bob, big waves or even a classy look,” says Gina.

The reason it maximizes elegance comes down to the way the technique is performed. “The calligraphic cut eliminates split ends because the cutting surface is very smooth. It can also contribute to strength and shine.

If this cut looks too good to be true, it just gets better. “Some who wear this look even report that it can make the hair appear longer,” Gina continues.

How to get the calligraphy cut

Since it hasn’t reached saturation point, you need to know who is making the cut. “It is very important to have a professional administer this cut because it is not a look that you want everyone to create. It should be someone who has a solid technical knowledge and professional experience. There are different levels of calligraphy pens indicated by the finish: black, silver or gold. The colors indicate the level of experience the professional has reached with the cutting technique, gold being the highest.
